Notifications
Wade Konowalchuk
I wanted to know if there are any plans to be able to control who is notified for what? Currently, if one person submits a video for review, EVERYBODY on my team gets notified of it, creating a great deal of spam. I would think that the reviewer should be the only person notified. And if I, as the reviewer, make notes, only the submitter needs to get notified of the feedback. I don't (I mean, I WROTE it), nor do others in my team who have nothing to do with said file.

I think the bare minimum change is to add a checkbox "Don't email me with changes I've made myself."

We've discussed this quite a lot, and quite frequently. There are so many different use cases for how people want notifications to be issued or suppressed that it's hard not building a deeply byzantine system for configuration to meet everyone's needs.
Quick poll: How do we all feel about big fields of checkboxes and dropdowns vs. configuring sets of rules like one might find in an email app? Or is there a third option we should be looking into?

Mike Jennings: can you be more specific? I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "big fields of checkboxes" vs "sets of rules like an email app". Thanks

Mike Jennings: I'm aware this is one of many specific cases, but my vision of this configuration would be as simple as:
Member - activate notifications when shot status changes (by other members or reviewer)
Reviewer - activate notifications only when a member changes status to For Review
Viewer - same as Reviewer
To be honest I can't think of a scenario when everyone involved actually needs to receive mails everytime something happens other than a new upload. Of course I'd love to understand as to why is this the current case.

Mike Jennings: Perhaps each project/review should have a field for whether to get notifications or not for each user? I know admin basically have to get all notifications or nothing, and members can only receive notifications on the projects they're added to, but is there a way to get more granular?
Mike Jennings
Chloé Gervais: It's about how you determine which users get which notifications under which circumstances, and which notifications are suppressed. There are lots of notification types, like uploads, new comments added, status changes and even billing updates. There are several user types, like owner, admin, member and reviewer. There are several circumstances, like the user who recently asked for notifications go to the reviewer only when the status changes to "For Review".
So the question we ask is: What is the best way to allow our customers to control those notifications? Is it a big grid of checkboxes with notification type vs. type of user? (Or project member?) Or a system for building rules, like:
When [Status] [changes to] [For Review] in [any Review], notify [Reviewers] via [email]
…each bracketed part has other possible settings, like
When [new notes] in [<Review name>], notify [Members, Admins] via [<Webhook name>]
Is that a little clearer?

Mike Jennings: I think checkboxes per Project is the best. We use SS at our university where I teach. All professors on SS are classified as an "Admin" so we all have access to every Project. Email overload.
Recommendation:
Two buttons to choose from: one button to say "no notifications" for each Project AND one button to say "yes notifications" which then opens up additional checkboxes to customize notifications for the Projects we do want.
My current workaround is that I tell my students to @ me in the comments when they upload something new. That's been working pretty good for the last year or so.
We appreciate all the great improvements you all have been making!

Mike Jennings: I would love to have access to as many checkboxes as possible in that case ! Thank you for taking the time to explain :)

Chiming in for this one too. We have a team of around 10 uploaders (pretty small) but only one reviewer, who is receiving more than several emails a day, on top of the other ones from his job position, which is making extremely difficult for everyone to get his attention only to the ones that really matter. Being able to send notifications only for the "FOR REVIEW" ones would make much more sense.

Hi all, Chiming into this thread, too, as the email notification side of things is certainly an area I would like to see some adjustments. With our organization, we provide new users with step by step instructions for how to opt out of notifications as when the account is created they are automatically opted into everything. This does create quite a lot of spam for them. To me it makes sense that users be opted OUT automatically when their accounts are set-up and then can opt in if they want more email notifications. Additionally, another option is the admin could adjust these settings when a new users is added to SyncSketch. I suspect some of the notifications settings have been tweaked since this was posted, but I do think this is still an area for improvement! Thanks!

We now have a document explaining what options are available for managing Notification Settings.

Maybe be able to manage the notifications for other users from an administrator account would be also useful. Thank you!

Great suggestion, absolutely - we have a more refined notification system on our roadmap, this includes subscribing to certain content and projects as well as notifications for mentions in comments.

Right now I can only get all notifications or none. We are working across a larger number of shots and projects which means I'll easily get 50 to 100 mails each day that tell me what I already know. It would be great to choose if I want to 'follow' a shot to get notes on that shot via email.

I am currently receiving notifications for 7 projects at my company, while only being involved on one. I need the notifications for just that one, changing this would be incredibly beneficial for every manager at our studio, thanks!
